Camp Kirkwood CIT

Apply Here

If you think you have what it takes to be a camp counselor, this volunteer program is the best way for you to try it out and learn from the best! After participating in an interview, you will volunteer alongside camp staff for your choice of one or two 3-week sessions of Camp Kirkwood or Camp Kirkwood Jr. Being a CIT is the absolute best training for future camp staff and is a fun way to spend part of your summer and develop valuable leadership and life skills!

CIT Program Ages: 14-15

*We would consider a 13 year old who has previously been at camp and camp staff feel would make a great CIT!
Please Note: A CIT is NOT guaranteed to be hired as a counselor after completing the CIT program.

CITs will be assigned to a specific grade within Camp Kirkwood, which meets Mon-Fri from 9:30 am-3:30 pm. Please plan to arrive by 9:15 each morning and you will be dismissed at 3:30 each afternoon. CITs will choose to work one or more sessions of Camp Kirkwood. As with paid counselors, CITs committing to work the selected sessions means no absences will be permitted during that entire session unless agreed upon before the CIT is hired. Exceptions include illness and family emergencies. Camp dates are as follows:

Camp Training: May 26 - 28 (specific dates and times TBD)
Session 1: 6/1-6/19
Session 2: 6/22-7/10 (no camp July 3)
Session 3: 7/13-7/24

CIT Responsibilities:
Assist counselors in planning and leading camp activities
Assist counselors in maintaining a safe and fun environment for campers
Provide ideas and suggestions to better the camp program

Qualities of an Awesome CIT:
Outgoing!
Always looking out for campers' safety
Enjoys spending time with kids
Not afraid to jump in and try out new ideas for games and activities
Comes prepared with "back pocket" games to keep campers engaged during downtime
Comfortable asking questions if something is unclear
Looking to make new friends in a fun work environment
Makes every day fun for their campers!

Applicants and parents must understand that the CIT program does not exist as a day care program or a free camp for teens. Those who are hired as CITs will be treated as camp staff and expected to act as such. CITs that do not follow the staff rules and choose to behave as campers will be immediately dismissed from the program. It is expected that CITs will fill this application out themselves, with assistance from a parent if needed.

In order to prepare applicants for future employment experiences, CIT applicants will participate in a group interview in order to determine who will be a good fit with the program. Jake will contact you to set up an interview date and time after you submit your application. Finally, applicants will be asked to provide the contact information for two personal references. These could be any two adults who are not related to the applicant, such as a teacher, neighbor, school counselor, religious leader, etc. Returning CITs do not need to be interviewed and do not need to list references.

If you have any questions, please contact Jake Pohlman at POHLMAJW@Kirkwoodmo.org or 314-822-5862.
